Ask Cheltenham: re-imagining your Town Hall

Cheltenham Town Hall is changing

We want to co-create a masterplan with current and potential users of the Town Hall that will underpin its future use for the people of Cheltenham and beyond. We are looking at all the options available to us and we would like your views on how we enhance this iconic venue.

Working with you, we want to ensure the Town Hall is developed to its full potential, opening it up to new audiences and future generations. It is crucial that the masterplan allows for modernisation while respecting the listed and heritage status and conservation requirements of both this beautiful building and Imperial Gardens.

What’s the vision?

Following a thorough background study, we have developed four options on which we are now seeking feedback through engagement with a wide range of interested parties and the public. This will ensure that the options developed are comprehensive, well considered and both physically and financially realistic.   These concepts are not rigid – the final outcome may include a combination of elements from all or some of them.  It all depends on what you tell us!

Visitor Attraction

The Town Hall will be one of the town’s ‘must visit’ destinations for entertainment, refreshment and relaxation.  It will provide a range of arts-based entertainment and activities with views across and access to Imperial Gardens.  A gift shop and a café, bar and restaurant will create the perfect destination for a snack, lunch or dinner against the backdrop of the building’s Regency splendour.

Community Arts Centre

We will create a number of spaces for different arts and entertainment as well as delivering a programme of activities, particularly targeted at young people, to unlock, spark and harness talent.  It will be a place for the community to visit and relax with activities, programmes and events to draw in a much wider range of people. It will be a place to meet even if you are not taking part, a place at the heart of the community of Cheltenham.

World Class Performance Venue

Building on Cheltenham’s reputation as a festival town, the Town Hall will be an international arts festival venue with a reputation for high quality festival programming.  Programming will be designed to appeal to a wide range of tastes, from orchestral through to rock concerts and club nights.  The venue will also appeal to the next generation through young producer events and children’s festivals.

Conference Venue

The vision is for a high quality, international-level conference venue offering a suite of rooms suitable to host small meetings, larger conferences, drinks receptions or banquets. It will have state of the art facilities including lighting and acoustics, production offices, guest speaker and dressing rooms and high-quality catering.

How will the project be funded?

We are carrying out research to help us develop a masterplan that, as well as transforming the physical space, is economically viable and able to attract significant external funding. Whilst Cheltenham Borough Council has identified £2.4 million towards the project, further financial support will be needed if we are to realise our full ambition.  We will be seeking this from a number of sources, including grant making bodies, business and individual fundraising.

When will this happen?

We expect phase one of the project – the masterplan – to be completed by March 2018.  Using this as a basis, subsequent phases of work will further develop the concepts and design for the Town Hall. We will also be holding an open meeting in early 2018 at which we will share your feedback and ask you to tell us your vision for the Town Hall.

Further design and implementation phases will follow.
