An Evening with Jaz Coleman

An Evening with Jaz Coleman
Jaz Coleman is an unfathomable and multi-faceted enigma. The charismatic front-man of seminal UK post-punk band Killing Joke, award-winning classical composer, and author returns as the prodigal son to his hometown of Cheltenham for an intimate evening of spoken word and music that will delight and intrigue hardcore fans and newcomers in equal measure.

This one-off event will burrow deep into Coleman’s unbelievable life story, from his early education at Cheltenham’s Bournside School, his career as a musical child prodigy, through the 40-year history of Killing Joke, self-imposed exile in Iceland, world travel in search of lost musical forms and working with the world’s top orchestras.

Born of Anglo-Indian stock, Coleman grew up in Grasshopper Green and swiftly displayed an almost supernatural aptitude for music. Having studied violin and piano from the age of four under Cheltenham College’s Head of Music, he went on to study in Leipzig and Cairo, where he completed a major study of Arabic quartertones, an influence that would go on to play such a large role in the development of his music oeuvre.

On his return to the UK in 1978, Coleman’s chance meeting with ‘Big Paul’ Ferguson in a Notting Hill dole queue would change the course of his life. This was the beginning of a group that went on to become one of the most influential UK bands of all time – Killing Joke.

Celebrating their 40th anniversary next year, the story of Killing Joke is one of excess, massive chart success, magick and rock ‘n’ roll mayhem of legendary proportions. It is a tale that extends to the recording of an album in the Great Pyramid of Giza and shared on-stage out-of-body experiences that defy rational explanation.

As a classical composer, Coleman has scored works by Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Nirvana and more to critical acclaim. Described as the ‘new Mahler’ by composer Klaus Tennstedt, Coleman won three Andel awards for his work with Czech band Cechomor and was made a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture for his outstanding contributions to music.

But even this is just the tip of an endlessly fascinating iceberg that the audience at this event have the chance to explore more deeply. A dual resident of Prague and New Zealand, Jaz Coleman makes a rare UK appearance to return to the town of his birth to share the tale of his life and projects as yet unborn.

A true renaissance man with a reputation to match, Jaz Coleman invites you to share the mystery and magick of his life.

This man changed my life, he writes the most beautiful songs – Dave Grohl, The Foo Fighters

It had this air of menace to it, which I really liked. As far as Jaz goes, I know that mysticism plays a very important role…he’s either playing with magick or magick’s playing with him – Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin
