BBC National Orchestra of Wales 2019
Piano Concerto in F
This Midnight Hour
Dazzling, grandiose and quintessentially American in its ragtime & blues influences, Gershwin’s Concerto was the perfect successor, in 1925, to his masterful 1924 jazz-classical fusion, Rhapsody in Blue, and Joanna MacGregor, admired for her ability to traverse classical and jazz styles with ease, is the ideal soloist.
Anna Clyne was described by Ricardo Muti as ‘writing from the heart and reaching across all boundaries.’ Tonight’s vivid, nocturnal sketch, premiered in Paris in 2015, takes inspiration from poems by Jimenez and Baudelaire.
This colourful programme, conducted by Elim Chan – first female winner of the Donatella Flick Competition – concludes with Elgar’s Enigma Variations and its crowning moment, Nimrod.
Pre-Concert Talk (2pm to 2.30pm): Presented by Jon James, from the BBC NOW team.
