Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra 2018
Dawn on the Moscow River (Prelude to Khovantchina)
Piano Concerto No.2 in C minor, Op.18
Symphony No.1 in G minor, Op.13, ‘Winter Dreams’
Written to introduce Act 1 of his famous 1874 opera, Mussorgsky’s evocative tone poem is the perfect concert opener, depicting the gradual approach of daylight using five variations on a solemn folk tune, while Rachmaninov’s 2nd Piano Concerto could justifiably claim to be the most-loved work in the entire repertoire, with its unforgettable romantic melodies and dazzling pianistic effects.
Written in his 20s, Tchaikovsky’s First Symphony caused him more inner turmoil than any of his later works, and yet the outcome, though youthful in its structure, is filled with beautifully constructed melodies, wrought from heartfelt fragments of his beloved Russian folk songs.
Pre-Concert Talk (6.30pm to 7pm): Presented by a member of the BSO team.
