Formed in 1989, by a group of five musicians, Liam Kelly, Shane Mitchell, Martin McGinley, Brian McDonagh and Michael Holmes who originally came together to record an album of local music. Inspired by the project (the album was released as The Boys of Sligo), they decided to turn the weekly informal pub sessions into a working band under the name Dervish.

The current line up of Dervish includes Brian McDonagh (Mandola, Mandolin), Liam Kelly (Flute and Whistles), Tom Morrow (Fiddle, Viola), Cathy Jordan (Vocals, Bodhran and Bones), Shane Mitchell (Accordion), Michael Holmes (Bouzouki).
