Conductor David Curtis
Cello Julian Lloyd Webber
Tchaikovsky
Serenade for Strings in C, Op.48
Shostakovich
Cello Concerto No.1 in E flat, Op.107
Mozart
Symphony No.41 in C, K551 Jupiter
Julian lloyd Webber, described as the doyen of British cellists, comes to Cheltenham to play the last of the great cello concertos to feature in this season’s programme. Shostakovich wrote it for his celebrated compatriot Mstislav ostropovich and, with its satirical undercurrents and a slow movement of rare beauty, the work was an instant success.
“This was the most purely pleasurable cello playing I’ve heard in ages”. - Independent on Sunday
The Orchestra of the Swan, described by BBC Music Magazine as “an excellent up-for-it orchestra”, plays Tchaikovsky’s homage to the serenades of Mozart, for whom he had great admiration. Appropriately the concert ends with Mozart’s final symphony, Jupiter, which Sir Charles grove acknowledged as “the greatest orchestral work of the world that preceded the French Revolution”.
