Conductor Andrew Litton
Piano Lise de la Salle
Ravel
Mother goose Suite
Prokofiev
Piano Concerto No.1 in D flat, Op.10
Walton
Symphony No.1 in B flat minor
The charismatic American conductor Andrew Litton has strong links with Europe: he is conductor laureate of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and now music director of one of the oldest orchestras in the world, the Bergen Philharmonic.
This concert of twentieth century music begins with one of Ravel’s most enchanting works, which includes his orchestrations of the popular fairy tales of Tom Thumb and Beauty and the Beast. Also on the programme is Walton’s brilliantly inventive First Symphony, noted by grove for its “orgiastic power, coruscating malice, sensuous desolation and extroverted swagger”.
Prokofiev wrote his strikingly original First Piano Concerto while still a student at the St Petersburg Conservatoire. Tonight it will be performed by a rising star, the French pianist Lise de la Salle.
“Miss de la Salle has a powerful technique … But she also demonstrated musicality in the more introspective interludes which she enhanced with colourful shading and phrasing.”
